Congratulations Midshipman 1st Class Barber!

Leading the brigade at the US Naval Academy is a big responsibility and a significant honor. Through great resolve, focus and hard work, Sydney Barber will be the new brigade commander for the 2021 spring semester. I want to join all Academy graduates from all of the US service academies in congratulating Sydney on her well deserved promotion.

According to the New York Times, Midshipman Barber set her sights on this position as a personal goal. Achieving her aspiration speaks volumes about her resolve and fortitude. You may read more about Sydney in this NYT article.

Students across the country -- no matter your background, race, religion, gender or other orientations -- may aspire to do the same. Gaining an appointment to the US Naval Academy, US Military Academy, US Air Force Academy, US Coast Guard Academy or US Merchant Marine Academy is tough work, and then reaching the highest of ranks at these schools is even more challenging. However, with early preparation, goal setting and significant effort, you can follow the same path as Sydney.

Here's a standing ovation for Midshipman First Class Sydney Barber -- we are very proud of you!
